Eğitim serüveni tam bir başarı hikayesi! 1886'da mahalle mektebinde başlayan eğitimi, 1905'te Harp Akademisi'nden Kurmay Yüzbaşı olarak mezun olmasıyla tamamlandı. Bu süreçte Selanik'ten Manastır'a, oradan İstanbul'a kadar birçok önemli okulda okudu.

Atatürk'ün fikir dünyasını şekillendiren isimler oldukça çeşitli. Mehmet Emin Yurdakul ve Ziya Gökalp'tan Türkçülük fikirlerini, Namık Kemal'den vatan sevgisini aldı. Özellikle Tevfik Fikret için "Ben ondan inkılap ruhunu aldım" diyordu.

Askeri kariyeri 1905'te Şam 5. Ordu ile başladı ve burada Vatan ve Hürriyet Cemiyeti'ni kurdu. 1909'da 31 Mart Olayı'nı bastırdı, 1911'de Trablusgarp Savaşı'nda görev aldı. Her görevi onu daha da güçlendirdi.
