I. Dünya Savaşı'nın temel nedenleri sömürgecilik, ham madde yarışı ve pazar rekabeti gibi ekonomik çıkarlardı. Bunun yanında silahlanma yarışı ve milliyetçilik akımı gibi faktörler de savaşı tetikledi. Avusturya-Macaristan veliahdının bir Sırp öğrenci tarafından öldürülmesi ise savaşı başlatan kıvılcım oldu.

Savaşta iki temel grup vardı: Üçlü İtilaf (İngiltere, Fransa, Rusya) ve Üçlü İttifak $Almanya, İtalya, Avusturya-Macaristan$ . Ancak savaş başladıktan sonra İtalya taraf değiştirerek İtilaf Devletleri'ne katıldı. İtalya'nın bu kararında İngiltere'den aldığı yardımlar ve Anadolu topraklarından pay vaat edilmesi etkili oldu.

Osmanlı Devleti başta İtilaf Devletleri ile savaşmak istese de onlar tarafından reddedildi. Bunun üzerine Osmanlı, siyasi yalnızlıktan kurtulmak ve kaybettiği yerleri geri almak umuduyla Almanya'nın yanında savaşa girdi. Almanya ise Osmanlı'nın jeopolitik konumu, halifelik gücü ve insan kaynağından yararlanmak istiyordu.

Biliyor muydun? İtalya, I. Dünya Savaşı sırasında taraf değiştiren tek ülkeydi! Bu değişikliğin arkasında Trablusgarp Savaşı sırasında İngiltere'den aldığı destek ve Anadolu'dan toprak vaatleri yatıyordu.
