I. Dünya Savaşı: Büyük Çatışmanın Başlangıcı

Bu savaş aslında uzun zamandır biriken sorunların patlaması gibiydi. Sömürgecilik yarışı, milliyetçilik akımları ve ülkeler arasındaki silahlanma yarışı gibi genel nedenler vardı. Ayrıca Almanya ile Fransa arasındaki Alsas-Loren sorunu ve Rusya'nın sıcak denizlere inme politikası da özel nedenler arasındaydı.

Savaşı başlatan olay ise 1914'te yaşandı. Sırplı bir öğrenci, Avusturya-Macaristan veliahdını öldürdü. Bu olay domino taşları gibi zincirleme tepkilere yol açtı ve kısa sürede tüm dünyaya yayıldı.

Savaş başlamadan önce Üçlü İtilaf (İngiltere, Fransa, Rusya) ve Üçlü İttifak $Almanya, İtalya, Avusturya-Macaristan$ olmak üzere iki büyük blok vardı. İtalya daha sonra taraf değiştirerek İtilaf Devletleri'nin yanına geçti.

Önemli Not: İtalya savaş sırasında taraf değiştiren tek ülkedir. Bunu Trablusgarp Savaşı'nda İngiltere'den yardım alması ve Anadolu topraklarından pay vaadi nedeniyle yaptı.
