Osmanlı Devleti'nde Askeri Yapı
Osmanlı Devleti hızla büyüyebilmesini güçlü ordusuna borçluydu. Her şey Osman Gazi'nin Söğüt'e yerleşip gönüllü askerlerle ilk fetihlerini yapmasıyla başladı. Daha sonra Orhan Bey döneminde "yaya" ve "müsellem" adıyla ilk düzenli ordu kuruldu.
Ama fetihler arttıkça daha fazla askere ihtiyaç duyuldu. Hem fethedilen toprakları korumak hem de yeni yerler almak için daha büyük ve daha iyi eğitimli bir ordu gerekiyordu.
Devşirme sistemi bu ihtiyaç için geliştirildi. Bu sistemde çocuklar ailelerin izniyle alınır, Anadolu'da Türk ailelerin yanına yerleştirilir ve daha sonra başkentteki acemi ocağında askerlik eğitimi alırlardı.
Biliyor muydun? Osmanlı ordusunun en ünlü birliği olan Yeniçeri Ocağı, devşirme sistemiyle toplanan çocuklardan oluşturulmuştu. Bu askerler padişahın özel muhafızları olarak görev yapardı!
