Evolution of UK Education Systems

The Tripartite system introduced in 1944 created a divided approach to secondary education. It established two main types of schools: grammar schools and secondary modern schools, with selection determined by the 11+ exam. Middle-class pupils typically attended grammar schools while working-class pupils were more likely to attend secondary modern schools.

In 1965, the Comprehensive System was established, abolishing the 11+ exam. Under this approach, all pupils attended the same local comprehensive school regardless of academic ability, aiming to create a more equal educational environment.

New Labour policies (1997-2010) focused on reducing educational inequality through targeted initiatives. These included Education Action Zones in disadvantaged areas, Sure Start programmes, Education Maintenance Allowance for poorer 16-18 year olds, and increased funding for state education overall.
