Core Beliefs and Key Differences
Ever wondered what makes Islam unique amongst world religions? Tawhid - the absolute oneness of God - sits at the heart of everything Muslims believe. This isn't just about believing in one God; it means God cannot be divided, has no partners, and is completely unlike anything else in existence.
Muslims follow either Sunni or Shi'a branches, which split over who should have led after Prophet Muhammad died. Sunnis believed Abu Bakr (Muhammad's close friend) was the right choice and that leaders should be elected. Shi'a Muslims thought Ali (Muhammad's cousin) should have led, and leadership should stay within Muhammad's bloodline through divinely chosen Imams.
The nature of God in Islam includes being both immanent (active in our world) and transcendent (beyond physical reality). Muslims believe God is omnipotent, merciful, and perfectly just. The Qur'an mentions 99 names of Allah that help Muslims understand God's characteristics.
Angels play crucial roles as spiritual beings made from light who carry out God's commands. Jibril delivered the Qur'an to Muhammad, whilst Mika'il brings God's mercy and nourishment to humans. They record our deeds and will eventually take our souls to God.

Life, Death and Divine Will
What happens when we die? This question has puzzled humans forever, but Islam provides clear answers through Akhirah (life after death). Muslims believe in three stages: Barzakh (a waiting period where angels question the deceased), the Day of Judgement (when everyone gets resurrected), and finally Jannah (paradise) or Jahannam (hell).
Predestination creates interesting differences between Sunni and Shi'a beliefs. Sunnis believe God has predetermined everything in a 'book of decrees', whilst still allowing humans behavioural choices. Shi'a Muslims think God knows what will happen but doesn't decide it - we genuinely have free will, and God simply sees all of time simultaneously.
Risalah (prophethood) explains why God sent around 124,000 prophets throughout history. Key figures include Adam (the first human and prophet), Ibrahim (Abraham, who rebuilt the Ka'aba and showed perfect faith), and Muhammad (the final and most important prophet who received the Qur'an).
These beliefs aren't just theoretical - they motivate Muslims to take responsibility for their actions, follow religious guidance, and find hope during difficult times. Understanding that God will provide ultimate justice helps believers cope with life's challenges.
