Ligaments: connect bone to bone and stabilis

The Muscular System and Supporting Structures

Ever wondered how your body creates smooth, powerful movements in sport? It's all about teamwork between your muscles and the supporting structures that hold everything together.

Ligaments are tough bands that connect bone to bone, acting like strong elastic bands to keep your joints stable when you're moving. Tendons work differently - they connect muscle to bone, creating a lever system that lets your muscles pull on bones to create movement. Think of them as the cables that transfer your muscle power to actual motion.

Cartilage is your body's shock absorber, sitting between bones to prevent them grinding against each other during movement. Without cartilage, every step you take would be incredibly painful as your bones would bang together.

The real magic happens with antagonistic pairs - muscles that work as a team where one contracts whilst the other relaxes. The agonist is the muscle doing the work (contracting and shortening), while the antagonist relaxes and lengthens to allow smooth movement.

Quick Tip: Remember that muscles can only pull, never push - that's why you need pairs working together to create movement in both directions!

We thought you’d never ask...
