Understanding Unit Rates

A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities with different units, like 80 feet per 10 seconds or $4 for 2 pounds. When we convert a rate to have exactly 1 unit in the denominator, we create a unit rate. Examples include 8 feet per 1 second, 60 miles per 1 hour, or $2 per 1 pound.

To change any rate into a unit rate, divide both the top and bottom numbers by the denominator value. For instance, to convert 80 feet/20 seconds into a unit rate, divide both numbers by 20 to get 4 feet/1 second. With money problems, always keep the dollar sign in the numerator (top number).

Remember this! Unit rates are super useful for comparison shopping. When you can see that cookies cost $0.17 per ounce in one package versus $0.20 per ounce in another, you'll know which is the better deal!

Unit rates help us make smart decisions in daily life. When comparing products, we can determine which option gives the better value. For example, when comparing two notebook prices ($5 for 2 notebooks versus $10 for 3 notebooks), converting to unit rates ($2.50 per notebook versus $3.33 per notebook) clearly shows the first option is cheaper. Similarly, when comparing speeds (like Bob driving 50 miles in 5 hours versus Jerry driving 72 miles in 12 hours), unit rates reveal Bob's average speed (10 mph) is faster than Jerry's (6 mph).

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
