İsim Cümleleri (Noun Clauses)

İsim cümleleri ana cümlede özne ya da nesne olarak görev yapan yan cümlelerdir. Bu cümleler genellikle "that", "whether/if" veya soru sözcükleri $wh-, how$ ile başlar.

"That" ile başlayan cümlelerde, bir netlik söz konusudur. Örneğin: "I think that the weather is nice" (Havanın güzel olduğunu düşünüyorum). Burada "that the weather is nice" kısmı, cümlenin nesnesidir. Eğer özne konumunda kullanılırsa, "That the world is round is a fact" (Dünyanın yuvarlak olması bir gerçektir) şeklinde olur.

"Whether/if" ile başlayan cümleler ise bir belirsizlik ifade eder. Örneğin: "I wonder whether she is studying" (Çalışıp çalışmadığını merak ediyorum). Dikkat etmen gereken nokta, özne konumunda kullanırken "whether" tercih edilir, "if" kullanılmaz.

Soru Sözcükleri ve Zaman Uyumu

Soru sözcükleri $wh-, how$ ile başlayan isim cümleleri de çok yaygındır: "I don't know where he lives" (Nerede yaşadığını bilmiyorum) veya "Where we will go is a surprise" (Nereye gideceğimiz bir sürpriz).

İsim cümlelerinde zaman uyumu önemlidir. Ana cümle şimdiki zamandaysa yan cümle de uygun zamanı kullanır: "She says that she is happy" (Mutlu olduğunu söylüyor). Ana cümle geçmiş zamandaysa yan cümle de genellikle geçmiş zaman kullanır: "She said that she was happy" (Mutlu olduğunu söylemişti).

Ancak bazı istisnalar vardır. Eğer yan cümlede genel bir gerçek veya tarihi bir olay anlatılıyorsa, ana cümle geçmiş zamanda olsa bile, yan cümlede şimdiki zaman kullanılabilir: "Aristotle said that the world is round" (Aristoteles dünyanın yuvarlak olduğunu söyledi).
