Europese Overzeese Expansie

Stel je voor: je bent een Europese handelaar in de 15e eeuw en de prijzen van specerijen schieten door het dak. Dat was precis de situatie die leidde tot de Europese overzeese expansie - een periode waarin Europeanen massaal de oceanen overtrokken.

Politiek speelde een grote rol: Europese landen wilden elkaar overtroffen in macht en rijkdom. Economisch werd het steeds lastiger om aan luxe goederen te komen omdat het Ottomaanse Rijk hogere belastingen vroeg en de traditionele handelsroutes blokkeerde.

Tegelijkertijd wilden christelijke vorsten andere volken bekeren tot het christendom. De Portugezen waren de pioniers die vanaf 1400 de Afrikaanse kust verkenden, terwijl Columbus in 1492 per ongeluk Amerika ontdekte toen hij eigenlijk naar Azië zocht.

Let op: Deze expansie creëerde het eerste wereldwijde handelsnetwerk in de geschiedenis!

Mondiale Gevolgen en Transformatie

De mondiale verbinding die ontstond had zowel positieve als dramatische gevolgen. Europa profiteerde enorm van dit nieuwe wereldwijde handelsnetwerk, maar de prijs was verschrikkelijk hoog voor anderen.

In Amerika stierven ongeveer 90% van de inheemse bevolking door Europese ziekten, geweld en dwangarbeid. Dit leidde tot de trans-atlantische slavenhandel waarbij miljoenen Afrikanen gedwongen naar Amerika werden gebracht om te werken op plantages.

In Azië waren Europeanen nog niet zo dominant, maar ze concurreerden fel met lokale handelaren. Zilver uit Amerika werd het belangrijkste betaalmiddel in deze handel. Het contact met onbekende culturen veranderde ook het wereldbeeld van Europeanen compleet.

Onthoud: Deze periode legde de basis voor onze moderne wereldeconomie, maar kostte miljoenen mensen hun leven en vrijheid.
