Weather in the UK: The Beast from the East

Ever wondered what happens when Siberian weather decides to visit Britain? In 2018, the UK got a proper taste of Arctic conditions that brought the country to a standstill.

The Beast from the East hit between 24th February and 4th March 2018, bringing anticyclonic weather with heavy snow, sub-zero temperatures, and 70mph winds. This Arctic air mass originated from Siberia and was particularly extreme because it struck so late in winter when people weren't expecting such harsh conditions.

The social effects were massive - thousands of schools shut down for multiple days, all flights from Heathrow were cancelled, and tragically, 10 people died including a homeless person. Environmental impacts included 10-20cm of snow (the heaviest ever recorded in Southern England), temperatures dropping to -12°C in rural areas, and snow drifts reaching an incredible 7 metres high.

Economic consequences were severe too. The AA estimated over 8,260 collisions costing more than £10 million in insurance claims, whilst major shopping centres and businesses closed early. The government responded by issuing red weather warnings, deploying snow ploughs and gritters, and even sending in the Army to help stranded drivers and NHS workers.

Quick Fact: The British Red Cross handed out blankets to people stranded at Glasgow Airport - showing how unprepared the UK was for such extreme weather!

Britain's climate is changing rapidly. Since 2000, we've recorded the 10 hottest years since records began in 1884. Summer 2022 broke records with temperatures hitting 40.3°C in Lincolnshire, making 2022 the UK's warmest year ever with an average temperature of 10.03°C. Scientists predict that by 2100, 40°C summers could occur every 3-4 years - a dramatic shift from our traditionally mild climate.
