What is Globalisation?
Think about your morning routine - your phone made in China, breakfast ingredients from around the world, and music streaming from global artists. This interconnected world is globalisation in action.
Globalisation creates deeper connections between countries through five main areas. Economic globalisation means transnational corporations (TNCs) operate worldwide, investment flows between countries, and world trade grows rapidly. Cultural globalisation spreads similar foods, clothes, music and values globally - often Western ones from North America and Europe.
Political globalisation involves shared ideologies, global organisations like the UN, and the dominance of Western democracies in major decisions. Meanwhile, environmental globalisation includes international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and shared challenges like global warming. Finally, demographic globalisation increases migration and tourism, making populations more mixed and mobile.

Interdependence and Global Flows
Here's why globalisation matters to you: when one country struggles, others feel the impact almost immediately through interdependence. Your local job market, prices in shops, and even your school timetable can be affected by events thousands of miles away.
The 2011 Japanese tsunami perfectly illustrates this. Honda workers in Swindon could only work two days a week because car parts couldn't be shipped from Japan. Within minutes, Germany's stock market dropped 1.2% as investors panicked about the economic ripple effects.
Global flows explain how this happens so quickly. Goods and services cross borders constantly - from commodities grown in other countries to products manufactured abroad. Capital flows involve money moving between banks, businesses and governments worldwide. Meanwhile, flows of people (migrants and tourists) and information (especially through the internet) connect distant places instantly.
Reality Check: Globalisation isn't new - it began centuries ago but has accelerated dramatically in recent decades, with each development building on previous ones.

Globalisation in Your Life
Your grandparents' world looked very different from yours, and globalisation explains why. In the 1960s, people holidayed in the UK or Spain - now Dubai or Florida seem perfectly normal destinations.
Back then, clothes were made in the UK, but now they're produced in China, Vietnam or Bangladesh. Foods like curry and pasta were considered exotic, whilst today you probably eat cuisine from around the world without thinking twice about it.
Even recently isolated regions like Sub-Saharan Africa are becoming increasingly connected through trade and tourism. However, globalisation isn't unstoppable - political and economic decisions can reverse it, as happened during both World Wars, the Great Depression, and decolonisation movements of the 1950s-70s.
Food for Thought: Next time you check your phone, eat a meal, or buy clothes, notice how many countries contributed to that single moment - that's globalisation at work.
