Essential Poetic Techniques

Ever wondered why certain poems stick in your head whilst others don't? It's all about the techniques poets use to make their words come alive.

Similes compare two things using "like" or "as" – think "brave as a lion" or "fast like lightning". Metaphors take this further by saying something actually is something else, like "life is a journey". Personification gives human qualities to non-human things, such as "the wind whispered through the trees".

Sound techniques create memorable effects too. Alliteration repeats the same starting sound in nearby words (like "wild windy weather"), whilst sibilance specifically repeats the "s" sound to create a hissing effect. Onomatopoeia uses words that sound like what they describe – "crash", "buzz", or "splash".

Structure matters just as much as sound. Repetition hammers home important ideas by using words or phrases multiple times. Juxtaposition (or oxymorons) combines contradictory terms like "deafening silence" to create powerful contrasts. Enjambment continues sentences across line breaks to control rhythm, whilst caesura creates dramatic pauses mid-line.

Quick tip: When analysing poetry, don't just spot the techniques – explain how they make you feel or what effect they create!
