Verbul "to be" - Conjugare și Utilizări

Verbul "to be" înseamnă "a fi" și îl folosim când vrem să spunem că ceva există. De exemplu, "York is on the River Ouse" (York este pe râul Ouse) sau "The building is at a busy crossroads" (Clădirea este la o intersecție aglomerată).

La forma afirmativă, verbul se conjugă astfel: I am (eu sunt), you are (tu ești), he/she/it is $el/ea/el este$ , we are (noi suntem), you are (voi sunteți), they are (ei sunt). Poți folosi și formele scurte: I'm, you're, he's, she's, it's, we're, they're. La forma negativă adăugăm cuvântul "not" după verb, iar la interogativ inversăm subiectul cu verbul.

Verbul "to be" are mai multe utilizări importante:

Pentru a anunța evenimente: The match is at 10 o'clock (Meciul este la ora 10)
Pentru identificare: This is my car (Acesta este mașina mea)
Pentru a indica vârsta: Sue is ten years old (Sue are zece ani)
Pentru a arăta naționalitatea: We're Swedish (Noi suntem suedezi)
Pentru a menționa ocupația: My sister is a lawyer (Sora mea este avocat)
Pentru a indica posesia: Are these bags yours? (Aceste genți sunt ale tale?)

Atenție! Verbul "to be" este întotdeauna urmat de adjective, niciodată de adverbe. De exemplu, spunem "She is happy" (Ea este fericită), nu "She is happily".
