How Humans Affect Our Planet

Human Impact on the Environment
When humans develop land, release chemicals, or build industries, we change our environment. These changes often harm natural ecosystems in ways that can last for generations.
Deforestation happens when forests are cleared for fuel, livestock pasture, plantations, or human settlements. Without trees, we lose biodiversity and important plants that produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the air.
Overpopulation occurs when too many people live in an area that can't support them. This leads to excessive waste production including hazardous, radioactive, and industrial wastes that harm environments.
Did you know? One of the biggest environmental threats is pollution from fossil fuels, which causes smog, acid rain, and contributes to ozone depletion!
Other harmful human activities include irrigation (which affects soil and water quality), soil erosion (when plants that hold soil are removed), mining (causing sinkholes and water contamination), and war (which can devastate large areas with modern technology).

Human Activities and Their Environmental Impact
People impact the environment in many ways beyond what you might expect. The oil shale industry pollutes air and water during extraction and processing, while releasing carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.
Pesticides might seem helpful for growing food, but they're major environmental troublemakers. Over 95% of sprayed pesticides miss their target species! These chemicals contaminate land and water, contribute to global warming, and damage the ozone layer.
Our daily transportation choices also affect the planet. Cars, planes, and ships burn petroleum, creating air pollution and releasing carbon dioxide that warms our climate.
Important! Human activities have three major environmental consequences: ozone layer depletion (letting in harmful UV rays), global warming (causing extreme weather), and species extinction (from hunting, pollution, and habitat loss).
These environmental problems aren't just about plants and animals—they affect our lives too, through changes in weather patterns, food production, and even the air we breathe.
