Şehirleşme ve Sanayileşmenin Başlangıcı
Şehirleşme sürecini anlamak için 19. yüzyılı düşünmen gerekiyor. O dönemde köylerden şehirlere büyük göç dalgaları başladı ve bu tamamen tesadüf değildi. Sanayi devrimi ile birlikte fabrikalar kurulunca, iş gücü ihtiyacı arttı ve köylüler yeni fırsatlar peşinde şehirlere koştu.
Fabrikalar genellikle şehir merkezlerinde kuruluyordu çünkü ulaşım ve hammadde temini daha kolaydı. Bu durum kentsel yayılma dediğimiz olguyu başlattı - fabrikaların etrafında işçi mahalleleri, dükkânlar ve diğer kentsel yapılar hızla gelişti.
Kırsal göç sadece ekonomik nedenlerle olmuyordu. Köylerde geçim zorlaşırken, şehirler umut vaat ediyordu. Tabii ki göçmenler kendi kültürlerini de beraberinde getirdiler, bu da şehirlerin sosyal dokusunu zenginleştirdi.
