Balancing Chemical Equations: The Methane Example

Chemical reactions follow strict rules, and balancing equations is like solving a puzzle where every atom must be accounted for. Let's look at methane burning in oxygen - a reaction that happens every time you light a gas hob at home.

The unbalanced equation starts as: CH₄ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O. When you count the atoms, you'll notice something's wrong - there are 4 hydrogen atoms on the left but only 2 on the right, and the oxygen atoms don't match up either.

To fix this, we add coefficients (the big numbers in front of formulas) to balance everything out. The correct balanced equation becomes: CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O. Now every atom is perfectly balanced!

Top Tip: Always count your atoms on both sides - carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen should have the same total number on each side of the arrow.

Remember the golden rules: you can never change the small subscript numbers (like the 4 in CH₄), but you can change the big coefficient numbers in front of the formulas. These coefficients tell you how many molecules of each substance are involved in the reaction.

We thought you’d never ask...
