Burn Classifications

Burns disrupt your body's normal functioning by destroying the protective barrier of your skin. This can lead to fluid loss, infections, and temperature regulation problems. Burns are classified into three main types based on severity:

First-degree burns affect only the outermost layers of the epidermis. They appear red and inflamed, feel tender to touch, and typically heal within 3-5 days. Sunburns are the most common example. Treatment usually involves anti-inflammatory medications and soothing topical ointments.

Second-degree burns destroy both the outer epidermis and portions of the dermis beneath. They appear as dark red, blistered skin and are quite painful. Healing takes 5-21 days, and there's some risk of infection, especially if blisters break open.

Third-degree burns are the most severe, destroying all skin layers (epidermis and dermis) and reaching into the hypodermis. They appear charred (black or ashen) and feel numb due to destroyed nerves. These burns take months to heal, often require skin grafts, and pose serious risks of infection, dehydration, and even death.

Measuring Burn Areas

Medical professionals use the "Rule of Nines" to quickly estimate the percentage of body surface affected by burns. This system divides the body into sections, each representing about 9% (or multiples of 9%) of total body surface:

The head and neck (front and back) count as 9% of body surface. Each arm (including shoulder, forearm and hand) represents 9%. The trunk and buttocks (front and back) each count as 18%. Each leg (including thigh, leg and foot) represents 18%. The genital region accounts for the remaining 1%.

Burns are considered critical when over 25% of the body has second-degree burns or when over 10% has third-degree burns. In these cases, immediate medical attention is essential.
