Understanding Mitosis
Mitosis occurs in our body cells (somatic cells) and creates two daughter cells identical to the original. The process is divided into four main phases that follow a specific sequence: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase (PMAT).
Before mitosis begins, cells go through Interphase - the longest part of the cell cycle where the cell grows and duplicates its DNA. During Prophase, chromosomes become visible, the nuclear membrane disappears, and centrioles separate to opposite sides of the cell. Metaphase is when chromosomes line up across the center of the cell with spindle fibers connecting to them.
In Anaphase, sister chromatids separate and move to opposite poles of the cell. Finally, during Telophase, new nuclear membranes form around each set of chromosomes. Cytokinesis (the division of the cytoplasm) completes the process, creating two separate cells.
Did you know? In animal cells, cytokinesis happens through a process called cleavage (pinching in the middle), while plant cells form a cell plate that eventually becomes the new cell wall.

The cell cycle includes mitosis (nuclear division) plus two other important stages: interphase and cytokinesis. During interphase, cells spend most of their time growing and copying DNA to prepare for division. This preparation is crucial because each daughter cell must receive identical genetic material.
When a parent cell divides through mitosis, the chromosome number stays the same in each daughter cell. For example, if a cell has 14 chromosomes, after mitosis each daughter cell will also have 14 chromosomes. This maintains genetic consistency throughout your body.
During mitosis, specific events happen in each phase. In metaphase, chromosomes line up along the middle of the dividing cell. During anaphase, chromosomes divide into two sets that move toward opposite poles. Cytokinesis completes the process by dividing the cytoplasm.
Remember this! The end result of mitosis and cytokinesis is two new identical daughter cells with the exact same DNA as the original cell. This process allows your body to grow and repair damaged tissues.
