Microscope Anatomy

A microscope has many important parts that work together to help you see microscopic objects. At the top, you'll find the ocular (or eyepiece), which connects to the body tube extending down to the revolving nosepiece that holds multiple objective lenses.

The middle section consists of the arm that provides structural support, the stage where you place your specimens, and stage clips that hold your slides in place. The diaphragm sits below the stage and controls the amount of light passing through your specimen.

At the bottom, you'll find the light source built into the base which provides illumination. On the side of the microscope, the coarse adjustment knob makes large movements while the fine adjustment knob allows for precise focusing.

Pro Tip: Always carry your microscope with one hand on the arm and one hand supporting the base to prevent damage to this delicate instrument!

Microscope Parts Functions

Every part of your microscope has a specific job. The ocular (eyepiece) is what you look through to view your specimen. The arm provides structural support for the entire microscope, while the stage is the platform where you place your slide.

The coarse adjustment knob moves the objective lenses or stage a large distance for initial focusing. For more precise viewing, the fine adjustment knob moves them just a tiny bit. The base forms the foundation of the microscope, and the revolving nosepiece rotates to switch between different objective lenses.

The objective lenses do the actual magnification of your specimen. To keep your slide from moving around, the stage clips hold it firmly in place. The diaphragm controls how much light passes through your specimen, while the light source provides illumination from below.

Remember: Always start focusing with the lowest power objective lens and then rotate to higher magnifications after you've found your specimen!
