Blood Vessels: Your Body's Highway System

Ever wondered how oxygen gets from your lungs to your toes? It's all down to three types of blood vessels that work like a perfectly organised transport system.

Arteries are the motorways of your circulatory system - they carry blood away from your heart at high pressure. Their walls are thick and packed with muscle layers to handle this pressure, plus elastic fibres that let them stretch and bounce back with each heartbeat.

Capillaries are where the real action happens. These tiny vessels branch off from arteries and get so close to your cells that they can actually exchange materials with them. Their walls are just one cell thick and permeable, making it dead easy for oxygen and nutrients to diffuse out whilst waste products diffuse in.

Veins collect blood from capillaries and carry it back to your heart. Since the pressure is much lower by this point, their walls don't need to be as thick. They've got a large lumen (the space inside) and special valves to keep blood flowing in the right direction.

Quick Tip: Remember the flow: Heart → Arteries → Capillaries → Veins → Heart. You can calculate blood flow rate using: volume of blood ÷ number of minutes.

Blood: The Ultimate Delivery Service

Your blood isn't just red liquid - it's actually four different components working together like the world's most efficient delivery service.

Red blood cells are your oxygen taxis. Their biconcave disc shape (like a doughnut without the hole) gives them a massive surface area for picking up oxygen. They've ditched their nucleus to make more room for haemoglobin, the red pigment that binds with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin in your lungs.

White blood cells are your body's security team. Some use phagocytosis to literally engulf and digest harmful pathogens, whilst others produce antibodies to fight microorganisms and antitoxins to neutralise dangerous toxins. Unlike red blood cells, these guys keep their nucleus.

Platelets are tiny cell fragments that act like your body's repair crew. When you get a cut, they rush to the scene and help your blood clot, creating a barrier that stops harmful microorganisms getting in.

Plasma is the pale, straw-coloured liquid that carries absolutely everything else - red and white blood cells, platelets, glucose, amino acids, CO₂, proteins, urea, and hormones.
