Understanding Chromosomes: Genetics and Biology Basics

Chromosomes and Genes
Chromosomes are essential structures made of DNA that contain the master instructions for your cells. Each chromosome has two arms separated by a centromere, with the short arm called "petit" and the long arm called "queue."
Your chromosomes contain sections called genes, which carry specific codes for every trait in your organism. The different forms of these genes are called alleles. When chromosomes exist in matching pairs (called homologous chromosomes), they contain genes for the same traits arranged in the same order.
During reproduction, chromosomes make copies of themselves called sister chromatids. Homologous chromosomes separate during meiosis, allowing for genetic variation in offspring. If your alleles are homozygous (identical), your offspring inherit the same trait. If they're heterozygous , offspring can inherit either trait.
Did you know? Scientists can create a karyotype—a picture of all your matched chromosomes arranged by size—to identify chromosome numbers and types. This helps detect genetic abnormalities caused by changes in chromosome structure or number.

Chromosomal Disorders
Sometimes people are born with the wrong number of chromosomes, a condition called aneuploidy. When extra chromosomes are present, it's called polysomy, and having three copies of a single chromosome is specifically called trisomy. These abnormalities can lead to various genetic disorders.
Turner syndrome affects females who have only one X chromosome instead of two (or have a fragmented second X chromosome). Effects vary but can include a webbed neck and kidney or heart problems. Down syndrome (trisomy 21) occurs when a person has 47 chromosomes instead of 46, with an extra chromosome 21. It affects brain and body development to varying degrees.
Klinefelter syndrome affects males who have XXY sex chromosomes instead of XY. This can cause unusual body proportions, reduced body hair, and fertility issues. Each of these conditions affects people differently, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe.
Important! Genetic counseling is available for families concerned about genetic disorders. Counselors document family history, create a pedigree (family tree showing inherited traits), assess risks, and may recommend genetic testing. This service helps families make informed decisions about testing and treatment options.
