Cell Cycle Basics
The cell cycle is an organized sequence of growth and division that cells follow. It consists of two main parts: Interphase and Mitosis. During Interphase, the cell prepares for division through three phases: G1, S, and G2.
In G1 Phase, rapid cell growth occurs as the cell prepares for DNA replication. Some cells may enter G0, a resting phase. Next comes S Phase, where DNA replication happens and chromosomes (structures containing the cell's instructions) are duplicated. Finally, in G2 Phase, the cell ensures DNA was copied correctly and completes its growth before division.
The cell cycle then moves to Mitosis, where actual division happens. This process produces two identical daughter cells, each with its own nucleus and complete set of chromosomes. These daughter cells contain identical DNA to the original cell.

Cell Communication and Cancer
Cells don't work in isolation—they constantly communicate using chemical signals created by their DNA. These signals help coordinate the cell cycle and ensure cells divide only when needed. Think of it like cells "talking" to each other to maintain order in your body.
When DNA changes occur, these communication signals can be altered. These alterations may lead to mutations, cell death, or uncontrolled cell division. Some mutations cause no change, while others may be beneficial or harmful. When harmful mutations affect the cell cycle, cells might begin dividing without stopping.
Cancer develops when cells divide uncontrollably due to these mutations. The rapidly dividing cells form masses called tumors that steal nutrients from normal cells. Cancer can spread throughout the body via the bloodstream or by directly touching neighboring tissues and organs.
Warning: Skin cancer, linked to sun overexposure, affects 1.2 million people annually. Just one blistering sunburn can double your skin cancer risk, and melanoma (the deadliest form) claims a life every hour.
Understanding how the cell cycle works helps explain why cancer treatments often target rapidly dividing cells. By learning about normal cell division, scientists can develop better ways to stop the abnormal division that occurs in cancer.
