Global Governance (1200-1450)
Ever wonder how people were ruled across the world in medieval times? Political structures varied dramatically during this period, with centralized empires rising alongside fragmented states.
In Europe, political fragmentation dominated through feudalism, where nobles received land in exchange for military service while peasants worked on their lord's land for protection. Meanwhile, Russia fell under Mongol rule through the Golden Horde, and the Byzantine Empire eventually fell to the Ottomans in 1453.
Asia saw powerful dynasties emerge, including China's Song Dynasty (960-1279), which used the "Mandate of Heaven" to legitimize rule and implemented a civil service exam system. The Yuan (Mongol) Dynasty (1271-1368) and later the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) continued centralized rule in China, while Japan developed its own feudal system with shoguns and samurai.

The Islamic world preserved knowledge at Baghdad's House of Wisdom and saw the rise of the Sufi movement, whose mystics sought direct experience with God. In India, the Bhakti movement rejected the caste system and emphasized devotion. East Asia developed Neo-Confucianism and Zen Buddhism, while Japan's samurai lived by the strict Bushido code.
