物質の分類と基本的な性質

物質は単体化合物の2つに大きく分けられるよ。単体は1種類の原子からできている物質で、酸素や水素、鉄などが代表例だ。

一方、化合物は2種類以上の原子が結びついてできた物質なんだ。水(H₂O)や二酸化炭素(CO₂)、塩化ナトリウム(NaCl)などがこれにあたる。化合物は元の原子とは全く違う性質を示すのが特徴的だよ。

物質の性質を調べる方法として、燃焼実験や電気分解などがある。特に水の電気分解では、水に電流を流すことで水素と酸素に分かれる現象が観察できるんだ。

水の電気分解と分子の概念

水の電気分解を行うと、陰極側から水素、陽極側から酸素が発生する。この実験では、**水分子(H₂O)**が電気エネルギーによって水素分子(H₂)と酸素分子(O₂)に分解されるんだ。

発生する気体の体積比は水素:酸素=2:1になる。これは水分子の構造(水素原子2個+酸素原子1個)を反映しているからなんだ。

💡 実験のコツ: 試験管に水を入れるのは、発生した気体が逆流するのを防ぐため。安全な実験には理由があるよ!
